01-05-2010 Jinggoy wants ship owner on BI watchlist

Posted: January 7th, 2010 @ 1:20am

Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Ejercito Estrada has called on the Bureau of Immigration to place in its watch list the owner of the ill-fated MV Baleno 9 that sank at the San Agapito point in Isla Verde off Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro last December 26.

The sinking of the roll-on, roll–off vessel resulted to the death of at least six persons including an infant while scores were still missing as of press time.

Estrada’s call to place the owner of the ship identified as Patrick Ang in BI’s watch list came after his office received information that the owner is planning to leave the country apparently to escape criminal liability arising from the incident.

“I am asking BI Commissioner Marcelino Libanan to take special attention on the case of Mr. Ang and not allow him to leave the country to escape prosecution,“ Estrada said.

Describing the past year as year of tragedies, Estrada stressed that the government can help out and ease the pain of the victims by ensuring that all those who are responsible in these unfortunate events such as the sinking of the MV Baleno 9 are brought behind the bar of justice.

“So many tragic events had happened in the past year, and while we can not bring back the lives that were lost and dreams that were shattered, the least we can do is ensure that those who are responsible are punished accordingly,” he explained.

MV Baleno 9 was bound for Batangas City from Calapan City when it sank, two days after another passenger vessel, the MV Catalyn B, sank off the coast of Maragondon town in Cavite, near the mouth of Manila Bay, while on its way to Lubang island in Occidental Mindoro from North Harbor in Manila.

PCG Batangas Station Commander Troy Cornelio sad Baleno 9 was hit by big waves, causing it to sink.

Sixty-six persons were rescued by a passing vessel of the Montenegro Shipping Lines, Coast Guard, Batangas police and personnel from MV Besta Shipping Lines, operator of the Baleno 9.
