JINGGOY RECEIVES OUTSTANDING GOVERNMENT SERVICE AWARD Posted: May 23rd, 2011 @ 11:47pm
The annual occasion conducted last May 10 in RCBC Plaza, Makati City honored the best and brightest players in the movie, television, recording and concert scenes. Mrs. Corazon Samaniego, President of the Guillermo Foundation, said they chose Sen. Estrada for his “invaluable service to the government and the Filipino people and his untainted record and meaningful projects throughout his political term” spanning more than two decades. The foundation also recognized “his continued commitment to support and help uplift the entertainment industry.” Previous awardees include former Vice President Noli de Castro, Batangas Governor Vilma Santos-Recto and Sen. Estrada’s father former President Joseph Estrada. “I thank the Guillermo Foundation for choosing this humble representation for such high honors. I am happy that as I receive my very first award in public service as a Senator, I am in the company of my friends and colleagues in the entertainment industry. That makes it even more special,” said Sen. Estrada. Sen. Estrada started his political career at a young age of 25 as Vice Mayor of then Municipality of San Juan, until he was elected for three consecutive terms as its Mayor. During his final tenure as Mayor, he was sworn into office as the National President of the League of Municipalities of the Philippines from 1998 to 2001. In May 2004, Sen. Estrada earned his official mandate as Senator of the Republic of the Philippines. Last May 2010, Jinggoy was reelected in the Senate with a fresh six-year term. Sen. Estrada, who is also a multi award-winning actor and film producer, is pushing for legislative measures to help the development of entertainment industry. These bills include Senate Bill 2549 or the Local Film Development Act of 2010 which creates the Philippine Film Commission; and Senate Bill 82 which seeks to revive the movie industry by providing incentives to the proprietors and operators of cinema. The Guillermo Foundation aside from being an award-giving body, also maintains its advocacy of helping the indigents get decent education. Mrs. Samaniego says thousands of scholars have already been supported by the event for the past four decades. -30- |
