01-06-2010 Jinggoy says House’s last-ditch Chacha bid futile, divisive

Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Ejercito Estrada today said the reported last-ditch effort by the leadership of the House of Representatives to push for the approval of a Charter change bill before the 14th Congress adjourns this year would just be a futile effort and would even further deepen the current political tensions in the country.
Estrada was reacting to reports that the House’s leadership would be making the final bid for Cha-cha during Congress’ remaining three weeks of session on January 18 to February 5. Speaker Prospero Nograles was quoted as saying the Chacha bill was among the 16 priority measures up for House’s deliberations before the Congress finally adjourns.
“I am appealing anew to my fellow legislators especially at the House to finally drop all efforts to amend the country’s Charter, because any Cha-cha move at this time and particularly within the last session days of this 14th Congress would be divisive and a waste of time and of taxpayers’ money,” the senator said.
Estrada, chair of the Senate Committee on Labor, Employment and Human Resources Development and the joint Congressional Oversight Committee on Labor and Employment, said instead of Cha-cha, Congress’ focus should be on issues greatly affecting the life of Filipinos.
“What we should focus on are measures that could help our countrymen recover from the effects of the recent calamities, tragic accidents, the global financial crisis and especially the slump in our country’s economy and finances,” he said.
“Our people have spoken. They have already declared their rejection of Cha-cha. We must heed their voice,” the senator added.
Estrada expressed confidence such last-ditch Cha-cha push would not prosper, but said legislators should not anymore waste time and efforts at all on discussing the measure during their remaining session days.
